FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Providence, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd.’s (BPL) commitment to powering sustainability across The Bahamas was recently solidified as it generously supported the build-out of a green space at C.R. Walker High School – the donation played a key role in helping the Knights secure the coveted Green Flag, making the institution the first public high school on New Providence to earn international recognition as an eco-friendly institution.

The Green Flag is an internationally recognized award presented through the Eco-Schools Programme, overseen globally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The award recognizes schools that demonstrate excellence in environmental education, sustainability practices, and student-led environmental action.

After completing the Eco-Schools assessment on Friday, January 9, 2026, the Green Flag was officially presented to the Knights during a special school assembly on January 15, 2026. The presentation was made by the Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF), the national operator of the Eco-Schools Programme in The Bahamas.

ECO Club President and Deputy Head Girl, Uriel Knowles, expressed pride in the achievement and the work behind it. “This recognition shows that we have a deep commitment to being environmental stewards,” Knowles said. “It proves that we don’t just speak words, we take action and make real choices to protect the environment, both at our school and in the wider community.”

Principal Treiva Culmer credited the school’s success to the strong support of community partners, noting that the achievement would not have been possible without their involvement. “We are grateful that BPL was one of the partners who shared this vision with us,” Culmer said. “Our students know BPL as the country’s power company, and through this partnership, they are learning that organizations within their community are actively helping to make their school, and The Bahamas, a better place.”

BPL Director of Health, Safety, and Environment, Zanda Bonamy, emphasized the importance of community engagement in advancing sustainability. “The more people we expose to the benefits of being eco-friendly, the more those practices are carried into homes and communities across the country,” Bonamy said.

As BPL continues to Build for Better, Bonamy shared her vision for the company’s future role in environmental leadership. “I hope BPL becomes a pillar of excellence in the environmental sector, not only in The Bahamas but across the region. By doing so, we create a home for Bahamians who are passionate about protecting the environment.”

BPL remains committed to powering and promoting sustainable, eco-friendly initiatives that safeguard our people, strengthen our communities, and protect our nation for generations to come.
