Nassau, The Bahamas

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 30, 2025

NASSAU, The Bahamas — Within hours of the all-clear being issued, Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) technical crews were on the ground across the Central and Southeast Bahamas conducting assessments, clearing debris, and restoring electricity to customers impacted by Hurricane Melissa. Despite major flooding, downed lines, and challenging road conditions, restoration efforts have advanced steadily, with significant progress made on Exuma, Long Island, Cat Island, and San Salvador.

“Our teams mobilized as soon as conditions allowed and immediately began restoring power to critical areas. From Inagua and Long Cay to Long Island and San Salvador, our line crews have been working around the clock under difficult circumstances. Their commitment to getting power restored safely is a reflection of their dedication to the people we serve.”

— Pedro Marcello, Regional Manager for the Southern Bahamas, BPL

EXUMA

Exuma experienced hurricane-force winds, resulting in several high-voltage poles being blown down on the mainland. Those affected areas have been safely isolated, and repairs to the overhead infrastructure are underway.

Restoration began early this morning with supply restored from the George Town Power Station to Bahama Sound #18 at 10:21 a.m., Bahama Sound #14 at 10:48 a.m., and Old Airport Road at 11:30 a.m. Power was re-established to Sandals Resort at 11:38 a.m., Bahama Sound #11 (King’s Highway) and Grand Isles Resort shortly thereafter, extending to the Ferry Bridge by 1:58 p.m., Hermitage through to the Rolle’s Construction area (RKC) on King’s Highway by 2:46 p.m., The Palms Hotel in Mount Thompson by 3:17 p.m., and Forbes Hill at 3:32 p.m.

“The Exuma team has shown incredible endurance. They’ve been working nonstop—through high water, fallen trees, and long hours—to bring communities back online as safely and efficiently as possible. Repairs to a small number of isolated high-voltage lines are ongoing, but the majority of customers on the mainland have been restored.”

— Marvin Green, Northern Region Manager, BPL

LONG ISLAND

Ahead of Hurricane Melissa, a generator fault required rotational outages on October 28 while repairs were made. Post-storm assessments identified significant damage to the Long Island Power Station roof, delaying restoration. The team is installing temporary repairs to allow units to be re-energized safely.

While Salt Pond to Stella Maris is not yet back online, supply is estimated to return by 9:00 p.m. tonight (Oct. 30), subject to safety checks. Meanwhile, the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team is repairing the grid across impacted settlements. Restoration has also been slowed by excessive flooding in several areas; to keep our linemen and customers safe, crews are waiting for conditions to subside before continuing work.

CAT ISLAND

Hurricane-force winds caused widespread outages on October 29. By mid-morning today (Oct. 30), the South Feeder was re-energized to Douds, and the North Feeder closed as far as Thurston Hill. Patrols and staged restorations continue as road access and weather permit.

SAN SALVADOR

During the height of Hurricane Melissa, both feeders were manually shut down to protect the system. As of 3:30 p.m., the North Feeder (Power Plant to Raymond Russell Plaza), South Feeder (Power Plant to Bamboo Point), and Club Med Feeder remain closed as the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) team continues working to restore supply.

Power has been restored to Raymond Russell Plaza on the North Feeder and to Bamboo Point on the South Feeder, though some customers between these points remain offline due to broken neutrals and other localized damage. Crews will return to these areas to reconnect isolated customers once conditions allow.

Plans are underway to dispatch a five-man T&D team to San Salvador on Friday, October 31, to assist with ongoing restoration efforts. Preliminary assessments indicate approximately 18 poles were damaged during the storm. The team will join local personnel already working to stabilize supply and complete system repairs.

ACKLINS

Supply has been restored from Spring Point to Pompey Bay. Crews are currently working to restore service from Spring Point to Lovely Bay as conditions allow.

MAYAGUANA & RUM CAY

Repairs are ongoing as crews address storm-related issues and move methodically to re-energize remaining customers.

RAGGED ISLAND, INAGUA, LONG CAY & CROOKED ISLAND

BPL team members from Inagua, Long Cay, and Crooked Island remain in Nassau following pre-storm evacuations; as a result, initial on-island assessments have not yet been conducted. Once cleared to return, crews will immediately inspect generation sites and distribution networks to determine damage and begin restoration. Preliminary reports indicate minor damage on Ragged Island, including a section of HV line and several LV service lines; repairs will commence upon personnel return.

Restoration continues in phases, prioritizing critical infrastructure such as hospitals and clinics, water systems, airports and ports, communication facilities, and major residential corridors. BPL will share island-specific updates through our official channels, including the BPL Direct WhatsApp Channel, as additional circuits are tested and re-energized.

BPL extends heartfelt thanks to its Family Island teams for their extraordinary efforts and to customers for their patience and cooperation during this restoration process. Our thoughts remain with every resident impacted by Hurricane Melissa. We are committed to restoring power safely, efficiently, and completely—no matter the challenge, no matter the storm.
