Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) confirms that as of 9:20 AM today, electricity supply has been restored to Preston H. Albury High School in Rock Sound, Eleuthera, enabling students and staff to return to the classroom.

While BPL technicians implemented a solution to safely restore power, the company stresses that this is a temporary fix and that a certified electrician must be engaged to properly rewire the circuit for long-term safety and reliability.

“We made the necessary repairs and connections that should have been completed by a certified electrician. Power has been restored to the entire school compound, and all lighting and air conditioning systems are now functioning… This is, however, a temporary fix. A certified electrician must still be hired to properly rewire the circuit and ensure long-term safety and functionality.”

— Pedro Marcello, Regional Manager, Southern Region (Family Island Division)

BPL is responding to misleading information circulating publicly that incorrectly attributes the school’s delayed reopening to the utility. A technical investigation determined that unauthorized rewiring at the school increased the circuit’s load from its designed 200 amps to over 400 amps, which damaged BPL’s transformer and caused the fuse to burn out.

BPL’s technical team has visited the campus on two occasions—most recently at 8:00 AM today—and documented the compromised electrical supply via photos and video for follow-up by the school’s appointed contractor.

“We continue to urge all customers, residential and commercial, to consult with qualified professionals and seek guidance from BPL before making any electrical modifications. Unauthorized rewiring or load changes can pose serious safety risks, not just to individuals, but to the wider community. Our priority is ensuring public safety and the integrity of the national power grid.”

— Toni Seymour, Chief Executive Officer, BPL

To support safe practices, BPL annually publishes an updated list of approved electrical contractors. Customers are strongly encouraged to use certified professionals for any electrical alterations.
