BPL CEO Defines Sustainability Through Climate Action, Energy Security, and
Affordability

New Providence, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) Chief
Executive Officer Toni Pratt clearly defined what sustainability means for the company during
her presentation, “Embedded Sustainability – Delivering High Quality Sustainable
Infrastructure: Challenges, Constraints and Solutions,” at the 2026 Bahamas Business Outlook
on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

Outlining BPL’s triangular approach to sustainability, CEO Pratt explained that sustainability for
the company rests on three interconnected pillars: understanding climate change, achieving
energy security, and making electricity affordable for every Bahamian.

“When we get this triangle right, we will achieve true sustainability,” said Pratt. “Sustainability
is not about addressing any one of these in isolation.”

CEO Pratt noted that government’s New Energy Era directly addresses the climate change
component of the sustainability triangle through the integration of Solar Energy, Battery Energy
Storage Systems (BESS), and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This diversified energy mix reduces
the company’s carbon footprint and decreases dependence on traditional fossil fuel-powered
engines.

“This approach provides a cleaner, more reliable, and more sustainable way forward for power
generation in The Bahamas,” said Pratt.

She further explained that the link between understanding climate change and achieving energy
security lies in resilience—the ability to rely on more than one source of power in the event that
there is a system failure. This resilience is delivered through BPL’s hybrid approach to power
generation.

“Solar, as a renewable energy source, is intermittent,” Pratt said. “However, BESS, which are
charged while harnessing solar radiance, give us the breathing room we need. At nightfall, or
during periods of heavy cloud coverage, the battery units seamlessly supply power to the grid.
This is resiliency.”

The combination of Renewable Energy, BESS and cleaner fuel sources such as LNG strengthens
the reliability and efficiency of power generation across The Bahamas. This improved efficiency
ultimately supports lower electricity costs for consumers, which completes BPL’s sustainability
trifecta.

As BPL continues to “Build for Better,” and works toward achieving the global goal of 30 per
cent renewables by 2030, on its current trajectory, the power generation company is poised to
achieve 32 per cent renewable energy by 2027 – barring unforeseen interruptions.

While concluding her presentation, CEO Pratt emphasized the company’s commitment to
long-term progress. “We are charting a more sustainable future powered by strategic investments
and innovative partnerships,” she said, “birthing solutions for a brighter Bahamas—literally.”
