NASSAU, Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) continues its aggressive push to reduce reliance on rental power generation units across the Family Islands, with the latest forward movement marked by the arrival and installation of four generation units in the Abaco Cays. These installations are expected to significantly improve the consistency and reliability of electricity supply for residents of Hope Town, Man-O-War Cay, and Guana Cay.

In Hope Town, two generators—one brand-new and one refurbished—have been installed, increasing capacity from 1.4 MW to 3.6 MW. This marks the first time the island has had two units of this size, ensuring added redundancy and protection against potential shortfalls on the mainland, according to Marvin Green, BPL Regional Manager, Northern Region, Family Island Division.

On Man-O-War Cay, a new generator has been installed and is already in operation. To support the increased capacity, a transformer upgrade was completed, boosting the power output from 0.6 MW to 1.8 MW. This upgrade ensures the system can now handle peak demand more efficiently and with greater reliability.

In Guana Cay, a brand-new machine is en route for installation. This unit will replace a 1.6 MW rental generator and is more than capable of serving both Guana Cay and neighboring Scotland Cay, with a new capacity of 1.8 MW—a major leap in energy security for both communities.

Looking ahead, an upgraded 750 kW generator (up from the current 600 kW unit) is scheduled to arrive this weekend in Grand Cay, enhancing service for residents. The unit will be shipped from the supplier in Grand Bahama to Walker’s Cay, which supplies Grand Cay with power.

“Rental units have historically contributed to power generation shortfalls and operational inefficiencies in the Family Islands. This recent investment represents a major step toward enhancing energy security, improving grid stability, and delivering more dependable service to BPL’s Family Island consumers.”

— Marvin Green, BPL Regional Manager, Northern Region

Additional investment also extends to BPL’s main generation station in Wilson City, where major progress is underway; while the island is currently operating on electricity being supplied by Units 2 and 3, repairs have been completed on Unit 1. Final testing is expected to take place over the weekend, introducing further redundancy and helping to eliminate the nuisance outages that many Abaconians have recently experienced. Once operational, Wilson City will have three fully functional units. Meanwhile, retrofitting on Unit 4—the final of four generation units at the site—is approximately 70% complete and is expected to be commissioned by the end of September.

Once all power generation units have been brought online, Abaconians can look forward to more reliable power generation on island.

“It is our hope that these investments in requisite infrastructure will eliminate the intermittent outages across The Abacos, making sure that our customers have a better experience and have affordable, reliable power going forward.”

— Marvin Green, BPL Regional Manager, Northern Region

This initiative also marks a pivotal milestone in BPL’s broader vision of ushering in a new energy era—one that includes a diversified mix of solar, liquefied natural gas (LNG), battery storage, and traditional fuels. The company remains committed to delivering resilient, sustainable, and reliable energy solutions for communities across The Bahamas.
