Bahamas Power & Light (BPL) is delighted to announce the resounding success of its sponsorship of the Bahamas Youth Chess Team at the 2025 World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad in Barranquilla, Colombia.
Thanks to BPL’s support, a group of young Bahamian athletes and their families were able to participate in this prestigious international competition—an opportunity that would not have been possible without it.

The Olympiad brought together 85 teams from more than 40 countries in a rigorous nine-round Swiss-team competition—each match testing the players’ focus, strategy, and willpower. Against this backdrop, the young Bahamians stood tall with determination and grace on the world stage.
A highlight among them was Sohan Umesh, who delivered a standout performance and is now recognized as the top FIDE-rated Under-16 classic chess player in The Bahamas. His remarkable display of talent is a testament to what focused training and the proper support can achieve.
