FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 22, 2025
NASSAU, Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Co. Ltd. (BPL) acknowledges the recent challenges faced by our Family Island customers, particularly those who have experienced extended power outages due to generation shortfalls and system disruptions. BPL wishes to clarify that residents of Abaco will receive a 50 per cent rebate on the base rate of their electricity bills for the next billing cycle, joining customers in Eleuthera, Long Island, and Cat Island as part of a relief initiative announced yesterday.
This clarification follows the announcement made yesterday by BPL CEO Toni Seymour at the weekly press briefing held at the Office of the Prime Minister, where the islands of Eleuthera, Long Island, and Cat Island were specifically mentioned. While Abaco was not named during the initial statement, BPL wishes to assure customers in Abaco that they are fully included in this rebate initiative.
During her remarks, Mrs. Seymour stated:
“I would like to apologize to all of our Family Island customers who have been experiencing extended outages due to power disruptions, generation shortfalls, or whatever the case may be, and to advise that we are offering a 50 per cent rebate on the base rate for the next billing cycle to the residents of Eleuthera, Long Island, and Cat Island.”
The omission of Abaco during the announcement was unintentional, and BPL wishes to assure Abaco residents that they are included in this relief initiative.
We deeply appreciate the patience and understanding of all our customers as we continue to work toward stabilizing and improving power generation across the Family Islands. The rebate is a gesture of our commitment to being responsive to customer needs and accountable for the service challenges we are working to resolve.
Further details regarding the rebate will be communicated directly to customers in the affected islands.
