New Providence, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) is powering Cervical Cancer Awareness Month with a $1,000 donation to the Bahamas Cancer Society, officially launching its 2026 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Cervical cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers affecting young women in The Bahamas. However, it is also one of the most preventable forms of the disease. Recognizing this, BPL’s Executive Chairman, Christina Alston, emphasized the importance of education, prevention, and early detection.
“Annual care is critical, and early detection saves lives,” said Executive Chairman Alston.
“We believe it is necessary to promote cervical cancer awareness—not only to demonstrate that BPL cares about the health of its consumers, but to empower young women to take an active role in protecting their health.”
The donation was received on behalf of the Bahamas Cancer Society by Assistant Administrator Patrice Moxey, who underscored the importance of continued public education and support.
“BPL’s contribution helps spread the message that women need to have their annual cervical screenings to better understand what’s happening with their bodies,” said Moxey. “This donation also goes a long way in supporting those currently battling cancer and strengthening the overall fight against all cancers, including cervical cancer.”
BPL maintains a diverse CSR portfolio, supporting initiatives and organizations such as fun run walks, children’s homes, schools, and community-based programs. According to Director of Health, Safety, and Environment Zanda Bonamy, maintaining a strong focus on health initiatives remains a priority for the company.
“Health is wealth,” said Bonamy. “Given the size of BPL and the number of families connected to our workforce, our health-focused CSR initiatives encourage hundreds of individuals and families to prioritize their well-being. We want our team members to not only work hard, but to live long, healthy lives and fully enjoy the fruits of their labour with their families.”
Through initiatives like this, BPL continues to demonstrate that its commitment to the Bahamian community extends beyond powering homes and businesses. By investing in awareness, prevention, and support, the company is helping to power healthier futures, reinforcing the message that informed choices, early detection, and community partnerships can save lives.
