BPL Restores Power to Crooked Island After Extended Outage

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 27, 2025
NASSAU, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) is pleased to announce that power has been fully restored to Crooked Island following an extended outage caused by mechanical failures. Two power generation units malfunctioned on Sunday, October 19, 2025, and Tuesday, October 21, 2025, respectively.
Southern Regional Manager Pedro Marcello expressed his satisfaction that consumers have received much-needed relief. “We know how essential power is to our everyday life, and at BPL, it is our goal to provide steady, reliable power 24/7. When the power supply is interrupted, we work tirelessly to restore it and provide consumers with the energy they need to carry out their daily lives. This is why we immediately sprang into action to find a replacement unit when the island lost its power supply.”
On Sunday, October 26, 2025, Marcello confirmed that a replacement generation unit arrived on the island and was successfully calibrated and brought online as of 12:00 p.m. Monday, October 27, 2025.
“We are pleased to have Crooked Island fully back online. Restoring power means homes are lit, businesses can operate, and essential services are running smoothly again.”
Restoration efforts began immediately after the first generator malfunctioned. However, unforeseen circumstances hindered progress.
“While this process took longer than initially anticipated, we want to note that our efforts to secure a new power generation unit began on Tuesday, October 21, 2025,” Marcello said. “Our team located the replacement unit on Wednesday and identified a vendor to ship the equipment on Thursday morning. This process experienced additional delays, and a secondary vendor was acquired. The unit finally set sail on Friday morning and again experienced delays due to unfavorable weather conditions over the weekend.”
With the island preparing for the potential impact of Hurricane Melissa, restoring power ahead of the storm’s arrival was paramount.
“Knowing that homes, businesses, and essential services have electricity as the storm approaches is a tremendous relief. Now, consumers can properly prepare themselves and their loved ones for the storm,” Marcello concluded.
BPL extends its sincere apologies to the residents of Crooked Island for the inconvenience caused and appreciates the patience of our valued consumers during this challenging period. Our thoughts and prayers remain with them and all islands in the path of Hurricane Melissa as we prepare to weather the storm together.
