Bahamas Power and Light Donates to Bahamas Sickle Cell Association in Support of Sickle Cell Awareness Month

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 12, 2025
Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) has reaffirmed its commitment to community health and awareness with a $1,000 donation to the Bahamas Sickle Cell Association (BSCA). The cheque presentation took place today at BPL’s headquarters as part of the company’s September Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, recognizing Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is one of the most common inherited blood disorders in the world, disproportionately affecting people of African and Caribbean descent. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 100 Bahamians lives with SCD, with thousands more carrying the sickle cell trait. Globally, about 300,000 babies are born with SCD each year, making awareness, education, and early detection critical to saving lives.
According to the Bahamas Sickle Cell Association, there are currently more than 500 registered warriors in The Bahamas, with 80% of them under the age of 18. While triggers vary, flare-ups can be brought on by sudden changes in temperature, dehydration, overexertion, and other health factors. The Association continues to encourage Bahamians to request a hemoglobin electrophoresis test, the only way to know whether an individual has the sickle cell trait or the disease.
“At BPL, we believe our responsibility goes beyond keeping the lights on. Supporting causes like the Bahamas Sickle Cell Association is part of how we give back to the communities we serve. Sickle Cell Disease affects many Bahamian families, and raising awareness helps ensure they get the support and care they need.”
The cheque presentation was attended by the majority of BPL’s Executive Team, underscoring the company’s collective commitment to supporting causes that impact Bahamian families and communities.
Accepting the cheque on behalf of the BSCA, Kristin Beneby, President of the Bahamas Sickle Cell Association, expressed gratitude for the donation: “We are deeply thankful to BPL for this generous contribution. Every bit of support helps us continue our mission to raise awareness, provide education, and advocate for families living with Sickle Cell Disease here in The Bahamas. Partnerships like this remind our warriors that they are not alone.”
This month also marks the launch of BPL’s Corporate Social Responsibility Campaign, a formal effort to highlight the many causes and initiatives the company has supported for years in communities across The Bahamas. Each month, BPL will spotlight a different area of need, reflecting issues that impact both customers and employees. As part of this campaign, banners are displayed in the company’s headquarters to signal solidarity and raise awareness.
“This presentation reflects our ongoing commitment to giving back to the community in meaningful ways. By supporting the Bahamas Sickle Cell Association, we are helping to amplify the voices of warriors and families who live with this disease every day, while also raising awareness among the broader Bahamian public.”
