BPL Provides Update on Electrical Incident at C.C. Sweeting Senior High School
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 5, 2026
Nassau, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Limited (BPL) is aware of an electrical incident at C.C. Sweeting Senior High School that resulted in a power interruption and injuries to three students.
Following concerns regarding the electrical supply at the school, representatives from the school, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Works, BPL and Bahamas Grid Company (BGC) met to review the matter and determine the appropriate corrective actions.
Assessments determined that the incident involved the school’s internal electrical system and its service connection. Following the installation of additional air-conditioning units, an electrical fault occurred and the building’s protection system did not operate as intended. This resulted in a blown fuse at the distribution transformer and a localized power outage.
During the incident, three students sustained injuries. The students were assessed by the school nurse, who advised that the injuries were non-life-threatening and that the students were doing well. Parents of the affected students were contacted and, out of an abundance of caution, were advised to have the students further evaluated at a medical facility.
BGC remains onsite assisting the school’s electrical contractor and will upgrade the service conductor to accommodate the additional electrical load. Power supply has been restored where it is safe to do so; however, two buildings remain isolated pending correction of the identified electrical issues and confirmation that they can be safely re-energized.
BPL takes this opportunity to remind all customers, residential, commercial and government, that significant increases in electrical load should follow the established permitting and utility coordination processes.
These processes allow both the customer’s electrical installation and the utility service to be appropriately assessed for the additional load, helping to ensure the safe and reliable supply of electricity.
BPL will continue to work alongside the relevant stakeholders as the necessary corrective work is completed.
