BPL Technicians Successfully Restore Power to Crooked Island Within 48-Hour Window

· Nassau, The Bahamas
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 29, 2025

Nassau, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) is pleased to report that power was successfully restored on Crooked Island as of 9:04pm Monday December 29, 2025 — less than 48 hours after a malfunctioning M&E power generation unit caused an island wide power outage.

The system shutdown occurred at 11:00pm on Saturday December 27, 2025 and subsequently impacted 220 consumers.

Pedro Marcello, Regional Manager for the Southern Region, Family Island Division, noted “our teams worked around the clock to restore supply to the consumers of Crooked Island. Today at 4:08pm our technicians from New Providence arrived in Crooked Island alongside an M&E technician – who is the vendor who we purchased the generator from, to assist our BPL Crooked Island technicians with restoration efforts. Thankfully, due to continuous efforts, we were able to restore supply to all consumers in Crooked Island.”

He continued, “BPL sincerely apologizes for all inconveniences caused and we are continuing to monitor this unit throughout tomorrow to ensure that everything continues to work well.”

With the M&E power generation unit now online, the Crooked Island Power Station is currently equipped with 465kw of power — which is nearly twice the amount of demand on island. While the load demand is currently being comfortably met, Marcello said, “Every effort is being expedited to ensure that we receive requisite parts to return our two additional units back online to support our operations in Crooked Island.”

As BPL continues to “Build for Better,” progress is being made in the rollout of its New Energy Era initiative, ensuring a reliable and resilient power supply across the Family Islands through a diversified energy mix of solar power, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
