New Providence, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) reaffirmed its commitment to building a more inclusive community by donating $1,000 to the Resources and Education for Autism and related Challenges organization (R.E.A.C.H) in recognition of Autism Awareness Month.

The contribution supports R.E.A.C.H’s efforts to raise awareness, expand access to therapy services, and provide critical support to families of children on the autism spectrum across The Bahamas.

BPL Chief Executive Officer Toni Pratt underscored the importance of awareness within both the community and the organization. “For any customer-facing organization, it is important that team members are aware of how to respond to individuals who may be on the autism spectrum. While their needs may not always be immediately visible, they may interpret communication differently, and it is our responsibility to ensure we engage with empathy and understanding.”

She added, “This initiative also holds personal significance for us, as we have members within the BPL family who are navigating this journey. We want them to know that we stand with them and remain committed to fostering inclusivity across our organization and throughout the communities we serve.”

Autism Awareness Month serves as a global reminder of the importance of understanding and supporting individuals on the autism spectrum. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with autism, highlighting the growing need for awareness, early intervention, and accessible support services.

Volunteer and parent with R.E.A.C.H, Lakia Brown, emphasized the importance of community partnerships in sustaining the organization’s work. “As a nonprofit organization, support from the corporate community is essential. Our reach extends beyond Nassau to the Family Islands, ensuring that families across the country have access to the support they need. Partnerships like this allow us to continue delivering assistance and expand our impact.”

R.E.A.C.H offers a range of initiatives to support people on the spectrum, including free weekly speech therapy sessions, a Saturday respite care programme for parents, and a young adult development programme focused on building independence and life skills. The organization also hosts a month-long summer camp, providing therapy-based support for children from across The Bahamas.

BPL’s donation forms part of the Company’s broader corporate social responsibility efforts, reinforcing its commitment to empowering communities beyond the grid and supporting initiatives that promote inclusion, awareness, and opportunity for all.
