BPL Powers 2025 Agrarian Awards Honoring $10,000 Female Farmer of the Year, Brenda Gedeon

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 22, 2025
NASSAU, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) is powering the local agricultural industry by awarding $10,000 to the Female Farmer of the Year, Brenda Gedeon, at the 2025 Agrarian Awards held on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
Gedeon has been the proud owner of Gedeon Farms for more than 20 years, raising hundreds of chickens and harvesting honey. Although she has been farming for over two decades, she never imagined receiving such recognition for her work. “I can’t even describe it—words can’t explain how I feel right now. It’s amazing, I am still on cloud nine,” said Gedeon, who plans to reinvest her prize money into expanding her farm by acquiring more layers and bee houses.
Backyard farming played an essential role in Gedeon’s agricultural journey, and she encourages other Bahamians to “farm, farm, farm. Food security is very important! I always remind people, if you don’t remember 9/11, remember COVID-19. If food is delayed or the borders are closed, backyard farming will allow you to feed yourself and your family.”
Presenting the award was Theodore Sealy, BPL’s Director of Communication, who highlighted the company’s partnership with the Agrarian Awards: “BPL is moving full steam ahead to not only become a more sustainable and environmentally friendly company, but also to lower electricity costs for consumers and farmers in particular.”
“As BPL introduces Solar Energy, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) into its generation mix, this hybrid approach will lead to a more efficient, reliable, and sustainable power supply.”
He added that these initiatives are designed to provide more resilient and reliable sources of energy for valued consumers while also reducing electricity bills across the country.
The Female Farmer of the Year Award served to highlight the strength and leadership of women in agriculture, a concept that BPL is deeply familiar with. Chief Executive Officer Toni Seymour noted that supporting this initiative was a natural extension of the company’s values, stating:
“BPL is no stranger to women in leadership. With that in mind, we saw it fitting to invest in other women of power. Believe it or not, BPL and farmers share the same goal: a stable, reliable source of power. To feed our nation, farmers depend on consistent, resilient energy, and that is exactly what BPL is committed to delivering.”
For BPL, “Building for Better” is not just about machines; it’s about investing in the people who operate them and the communities who benefit from them.
