LOCATION — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) recently recognized a group of young golfers who represented the company as the BPL Power Drivers during the 2026 Duke of Edinburgh Cup Semi-Finals, held at the Ocean Club Golf Course at Atlantis Paradise Island.

The golfers, representing the University of The Bahamas Mingoes and the wider local golf community, participated on behalf of BPL in the prestigious tournament, which also supported the Governor General’s Youth Award (GGYA), a national youth development programme that empowers young Bahamians through service, skill-building, physical recreation, and adventure.

During a special presentation at BPL’s headquarters, Theodore Sealy, BPL Director of Communications, thanked the golfers for answering the call to represent. “This meant a great deal to BPL,” said Sealy. “Your participation aligned perfectly with our mission of supporting youth development and youth empowerment. As a company, we do more than power communities; we continue to power beyond the grid. You represented BPL beautifully, and we are proud to show our appreciation for your efforts.”

The participating golfers expressed appreciation for the opportunity to compete, represent BPL, and be part of an event connected to youth empowerment and community development.

Nikko Storr, who has been playing golf for two years, described the experience as both enjoyable and meaningful. “It was a fun experience being part of this team,” Storr said. “I love the opportunity to play for an organization that empowers youth. BPL sees the importance of sports and the importance of the next generation.”

Travis Cartwright, a recent graduate of the University of The Bahamas, said the tournament was a valuable opportunity to participate in one of the country’s premier golf events. “The Duke of Edinburgh Tournament is a very prestigious tournament in this country,” Cartwright said. “Any time I get the opportunity to play in a tournament like that and represent an organization that is doing good for the community, I welcome it.”

Travis Styles, who has been playing golf for several months, credited his grandfather, a professional golfer from the Berry Islands, for inspiring him to take up the sport. “My grandfather motivated me to try out and make the team,” Styles said. “Playing in this tournament was a phenomenal experience. It was a different format for me, especially playing at Ocean Club, but overall, it was a great experience.”

Darius Thompson, another member of the team, said he initially viewed golf as “a boring, old game,” but became inspired after watching others play. “I enjoy playing with my teammates, and the overall experience has been great,” Thompson said.
BPL Chief Operating Officer Anthony Christie commended the young golfers and said the company is proud to support initiatives that create opportunities for young Bahamians.

“It is an honour and a privilege for BPL to support these young golfers,” Christie said. “Golf is a growing sport, and it provides opportunities for scholarships, development, and even professional careers. As a company, we are proud to encourage the next generation and support programmes that help young people develop their talents.”

BPL Chief Executive Officer Toni Pratt said the company’s support of the young golfers reflects its broader commitment to investing in youth development and creating opportunities beyond the energy sector.

“At BPL, we believe in powering more than communities; we believe in powering potential,” said Pratt. “These young golfers represented the company with pride, discipline, and excellence, while participating in an event that also supports youth development through the Governor General’s Youth Award. We are proud to support opportunities that help young Bahamians grow, compete, and lead.”

The 2026 Duke of Edinburgh Cup Semi-Finals brought together golfers and supporters for a tournament that blended sport, purpose, and community impact. Through its sponsorship and recognition of the young golfers, BPL reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment, national development, and powering possibilities beyond the grid.
