LOCATION — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the health and well-being of Bahamian families with a $1,000 donation to The Sir Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation, continuing a longstanding partnership that helps provide life-saving cardiac care to children in need.
“BPL is pleased to partner with The Sir Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation once again this year,” said Chief Executive Officer Toni Pratt. “We have supported the Foundation for many years by attending and purchasing tables at its Annual Heart Ball, and this year is no exception. However, we wanted to do a little extra to show that we see the important work being done and truly value the way it transforms the lives of so many Bahamian children in need of life-changing heart surgeries.”
The Foundation has long been a pillar of hope for families across The Bahamas, stepping in to assist with the significant financial burden associated with specialized cardiac procedures, often performed overseas.
BPL’s Director of Health, Safety, and Environment, Zanda Bonamy, shared a deeply personal testimony of the Foundation’s impact. Shortly after the birth of her daughter, what appeared to be a routine recovery turned into a medical emergency.
“She looked healthy at first, but a murmur was detected, and she became cyanotic. She required surgery at just five weeks old,” Bonamy recalled. “I was young, not working, and had no medical insurance. I had no idea how I was going to pay for a procedure that cost nearly $100,000.”
Bonamy explained that overseas hospitals require full payment upfront before treatment is administered, making the Foundation’s assistance critical.
“That is how vital these donations are. The Foundation came through for my family when we needed it most.”
Public Relations Officer for The Sir Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation, Yolanda Fernander, emphasized the continued need for corporate and community partnerships.
“It means everything to us when organizations like BPL support our cause,” Fernander said. “Each year, several children come to us with heart defects that require urgent surgical intervention. These procedures are extremely expensive, and we are always in need of additional funding. Every donation helps us save lives.”
As BPL continues to “build for better,” the company remains committed to investing in initiatives that strengthen families and uplift communities, recognizing that powering The Bahamas extends beyond electricity; it also includes supporting the health, hope, and future of the nation’s children.
