BPL Secures Emergency Equipment For Abaco Power Station; Restoration Possible Before Nightfall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 10, 2025

Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) has made significant progress in restoration efforts at its Wilson City Power Station (WCPS) in Abaco; the Regional Family Island Manager, Northern Division, confirmed late Wednesday afternoon that the heavy-duty compressor, on loan from the island’s volunteer fire department, has been successfully installed and is currently undergoing testing.

The compressor is being closely monitored as technicians complete system checks to confirm that it can provide the airflow required to restart power generation at the plant.

Chief Operating Officer Anthony Christie said installing the compressor marked a critical milestone in restoring service.

“Now that installation is complete, our teams are actively testing the system and preparing for startup procedures,” said COO Christie. “If all checks are successful, we anticipate the gradual restoration of power to begin before nightfall today.”

The outage at WCPS was caused by the failure of both the station’s main electrical compressor and its backup diesel compressor. These units are essential for supplying airflow into the power station; without them, the power generation engines cannot operate.

In the interim, BPL has implemented a rotational power schedule to ensure that power supply is equally distributed between consumers in the North, Central, and South Abaco. This rotational power scheduling will continue until power has been successfully restored.

BPL sincerely thanks the Volunteer Fire Department for its support in providing the heavy-duty compressor and commends its teams and partners for their commitment and swift response during this emergency.

As more information becomes available from technicians in the field, additional updates will be provided on our recently launched BPL Direct Northern Region WhatsApp Channel.

BPL sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused and thanks its valued consumers for their patience and cooperation as teams work urgently to restore power.
