Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) has announced plans to invest $1.2 million in upgrading and expanding the South Long Island power network to improve stability and resilience ahead of the 2026 summer period.
The initiative includes the installation of new generation units at the Clarence Town Power Station, major overhead line reinforcements, and system upgrades that will reduce outages and enhance load management for communities from Clarence Town to Mortimer’s and Millerton.
“This $1.2 million investment is about ensuring the families and businesses of Long Island have a stable and efficient supply of electricity year-round while building capacity for future growth.”
The project forms part of BPL’s nationwide grid revitalization strategy and will include the shipment of two new engines totaling 2 MW capacity to support Clarence Town and neighboring settlements. Additional improvements include upgrading transformers, enhancing feeder protection systems, and replacing aging infrastructure.
Regional Manager for Long Island Jason Knowles said crews are already mobilized for the first phase of work scheduled to commence in November. Completion is targeted for early 2026.
BPL continues to prioritize investments in Family Island grids to support economic development and improve quality of life throughout The Bahamas.
