BPL Rocks Its Socks In Support of World Down Syndrome Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 30, 2026
New Providence, Bahamas— Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) “rocked their socks” in support of World Down Syndrome Day, reinforcing its commitment to inclusion and community engagement through its continued partnership with the Bahamas Down Syndrome Association (BDSA).
On World Down Syndrome Day, colourful and mismatched socks are worn as a symbol of awareness, inclusion, and celebration, inspired by the sock-like shape of chromosomes and the three copies of the 21st chromosome that define Down syndrome. The vibrant display not only represents diversity and individuality but also sparks meaningful conversations that promote acceptance, equal opportunity, and the message that every person belongs.
As part of the global “Rock Your Socks” campaign, BPL team members proudly wore their socks on Friday, March 20, to raise awareness and show support for persons living with Down syndrome.
Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21, which affects physical and cognitive development and may require varying levels of support and early intervention. In The Bahamas, organizations such as the Bahamas Down Syndrome Association play a vital role in raising awareness, promoting inclusion, and ensuring that individuals with Down syndrome have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
“At BPL, we believe in building a more inclusive Bahamas by supporting organizations that make a tangible impact in people’s lives,” said Zanda Bonamy, BPL Director of Health Safety and Environment. “Partnering with the Bahamas Down Syndrome Association allows us to not only raise awareness but to actively demonstrate our support for inclusion and empowerment within our communities.”
This marks the second consecutive year BPL has welcomed the Association to its headquarters to host its annual sock sale, one of BDSA’s major fundraising initiatives aimed at supporting programmes and advancing plans for a dedicated facility to provide critical services, including speech, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy.
Vice President of the Bahamas Down Syndrome Association, Ida Poitier-Turnquest, emphasized the importance of the initiative and the ongoing partnership. “World Down Syndrome Day is a global movement, and through our ‘Rock Your Socks’ campaign, we encourage people to raise awareness and promote inclusion across society.”
She continued, “We are grateful to BPL for their continued support. This is the second year they have welcomed us, and we truly appreciate their partnership, including their participation in our Buddy Walk last October.”
BPL graphic artist Jaheim Rahming, who participated in the initiative by purchasing socks, shared his support for the cause. “It’s a simple gesture, but it means a lot. Wearing these socks is a way to show support, spark conversations, and remind people of the importance of inclusion,” Rahming said.
BPL remains committed to powering communities beyond electricity by supporting initiatives that promote awareness, inclusion, and national development.
