BPL Technical Teams Restore Power to Majority of Customers in Less Than 24 Hours After Tropical Storm Imelda

Nassau, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) is proud to announce that, following the passage of Tropical Storm Imelda, our dedicated crews have restored electricity to the majority of customers across the Northwest and Central Bahamas in less than 24 hours.

During a press briefing held at the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Authority headquarters on Monday evening, BPL Chief Operating Officer Anthony Christie praised BPL technical teams for their heroic dedication toward restoring electricity supply. “Working around the clock in the face of heavy rain, high winds, and flooding, BPL’s emergency response teams demonstrated extraordinary commitment and resilience. Their efforts ensured that power was restored swiftly and safely to homes and businesses impacted by the storm.”

Customer engagement also played a critical role in this success. Christie noted, “Hundreds of Bahamians utilized the newly launched BPL Service Hub, submitting location-tagged reports and photos of outages and damaged infrastructure. This real-time information allowed BPL to deploy teams more efficiently, reduce response times, and accelerate restoration across affected communities.”

Below are specific updates on all islands impacted by Tropical Storm Imelda:

  • Abaco (North, Central, South & Cays):
    • Outages occurred due to system shutdowns, transmission line faults, and a cable burnout affecting the Marsh Harbor and Wilson City power stations.
    • By 2:36 p.m. yesterday, South Abaco was restored, with additional areas re-energized as reconfiguration advanced.
    • Power has been restored to Cooper’s Town and Fire Road in North Abaco, while troubleshooting continues in isolated pockets.
    • Power has been restored to 50% of all customers affected by Tropical Storm Imelda with assessment and restoration efforts underway for the remaining 50%.
  • Bimini, Great Harbour Cay & Bullocks Harbour:
    • Bimini remained online with intermittent rainfall.
    • Great Harbour Cay feeder was restored within six hours, and Bullocks Harbour customers were re-energized by 8:45 a.m. today.
  • Cat Island:
    • An islandwide outage was reported but resolved swiftly.
    • The North feeder was restored within 30 minutes, and by 12:15 p.m. today, all customers were re-energized.
  • Eleuthera:
    • As of 4:04 p.m. today, supply was restored from Hatchet Bay down to Bannerman Town, with small pockets in Tarpum Bay, Governor’s Harbour, and Rock Sound still being addressed.
    • In North Eleuthera, crews are working on the Gregory Town feeder, which has experienced intermittent trips.
  • Long Island:
    • Emergency outages were conducted to facilitate repairs to overhead lines and replace a damaged high-voltage pole.
    • All affected communities, including Deadman’s Cay to Gordon’s, have since been restored.
  • New Providence:
    • Multiple outages were reported, including Adelaide, Coral Harbour, Nassau Village, Wulff Road, and Paradise Island. Despite flooding challenges, major areas such as Carmichael Road, Bacardi Road, Westridge, Paradise Island, and more were restored by the morning after the storm.
    • Nearly all communities have now been re-energized, with crews addressing remaining isolated cases.
  • San Salvador: The island remained fully online throughout the storm.

As we continue to improve the efficiency and resiliency of our systems, we remain focused on delivering safe, reliable, and continuous power to every community — no matter the challenge, no matter the storm. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our employees for their dedication and to our customers for their patience, cooperation, and use of the BPL Service Hub, which has proven to be a valuable tool in strengthening our restoration process.

BPL Offices in the Northwest and Central Bahamas will reopen as of 8:00am Tuesday, September 30, 2025, for business as usual.
