Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd.’s (BPL) consumers in New Providence could begin benefiting from solar power as early as the first quarter of 2027, as construction ramps up on major renewable energy projects across the island.

In partnership with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) such as INTI Corporation Bahamas and Eco Energy Bahamas, BPL is driving the nation’s transition toward a cleaner, more reliable energy future — marking a major step toward achieving The Bahamas’ goal of generating 30 percent of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

INTI President and CEO Owen Bethel announced during the INTI Youth Energy Forum on October 10, 2025, that work is well underway on the company’s 20-megawatt solar farm at the Baillou Hills Power Plant, set to come online by early 2027.

“Our staff and equipment are already on the ground. We’ve cleared the property and are preparing for site development. Once complete, this solar farm will feed directly into BPL’s grid, helping provide a constant, cleaner, and more reliable power supply to New Providence.”

Eco Energy Bahamas, another IPP partnering with BPL, is also advancing its renewable energy project. Managing Director Vince Pedican confirmed that work has begun on their solar farm at Coral Harbour, with completion expected within 16 to 18 months.

“We’re deeply committed to protecting the environment as we build. Our team is actively replanting endangered species and following our Environmental Impact Assessment guidelines to ensure this project contributes to a greener, more sustainable future.”

— Vince Pedican, Managing Director, Eco Energy Bahamas

BPL CEO Toni Seymour explained how these projects will strengthen grid reliability and reduce costs through integration with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS):

“These solar farms will operate in tandem with BESS — cleaner, more reliable and resilient energy sources. During the day, solar panels capture energy while charging the BESS, which automatically activates to supply power once the sun sets. This system adds resilience to our New Energy Era regime and helps lower electricity bills as we reduce reliance on heavy fuel units.”

— Toni Seymour, Chief Executive Officer, BPL

Together, these initiatives mark a pivotal chapter in The Bahamas’ New Energy Era — one defined by innovation, sustainability, and national progress. As construction accelerates and new technologies come online, BPL and its partners continue to “Build for Better” and power the nation’s vision of a resilient, renewable, and reliable energy future.
