New Providence, Bahamas— Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) is redefining utility communication in The Bahamas, highlighting significant advancements in transparency, responsiveness, and customer engagement at the 2026 Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) Human Resources, Corporate Communications and Customer Service Conference held March 22–25 in Belize City, Belize.

Director of Communications, Theodore Sealy, presented to dozens of regional utility leaders on “Strategic Storytelling: Showcasing the Human Side of Electricity,” outlining how BPL has transformed its communications approach to better connect with customers nationwide.

Central to that transformation has been the expansion of BPL’s digital and regional communication channels, alongside a more integrated use of traditional, mainstream, and digital media platforms to deliver timely, accessible, and human-centred messaging.

Sealy emphasized that effective communication requires moving beyond technical messaging to create meaningful connections with customers.

“When communication stays at the level of systems, and people only see us as a power generation company—a machine, a utility—it does us no good in telling our real stories,” said Sealy. “But when we tell those stories, we become relatable, we become accountable, and people begin to see us as humans.”

He noted that this shift has been intentional, rooted in a deeper understanding of what customers expect from modern utilities.

“One thing became clear—customers did not just lack communication and information, they lacked connection with the brand,” he added. “So when I entered BPL, I knew my role was not just to communicate, but to help tell the stories of the people behind the power.”

As part of this transformation, BPL has strengthened its presence across multiple communication platforms, ensuring a consistent and unified voice across television, radio, print, and digital channels.

Initiatives such as the national television series “Keeping Current,” the weekly newspaper feature “Watt’s Up with Wilson,” and the monthly radio programme “Energy Talks” have been central to this effort—providing consumers with accessible information, practical energy tips, and a clearer understanding of the Company’s operations and ongoing improvements.
At the same time, BPL has expanded its WhatsApp communication platform, introducing geo-targeted regional channels to deliver more localized, real-time updates across New Providence and the Family Islands—significantly improving the speed and relevance of outage and restoration communication.

Sealy further underscored the Company’s shift toward more responsive and customer-focused engagement.
“It’s one thing to hear your customers complain and turn a blind eye,” said Sealy. “It’s another thing to listen, respond, and provide answers truly—and that’s the shift we’ve made.”

The presentation was well received by regional counterparts, with attendees commending both the depth of the strategy and the pace of BPL’s transformation.

“The presentation was amazing—I’ve been following Bahamas Power and Light for quite some time, so I may be a bit biased,” said Paula Gordon of NV GEBE in St. Maarten. “But the information was very well delivered. It was impressive to see the amount of work being done by such a small team and how quickly that team has grown. The progress you’ve made in such a short time is remarkable.”

BPL continues to advance its communications strategy as part of its transition into a New Energy Era, ensuring that customers are not only informed, but connected, engaged, and empowered.
