BPL Prepared as Hurricane Melissa Approaches the Southern Bahamas; Power Plants on Scheduled Shut Down
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 28, 2025
NASSAU, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) is closely monitoring Hurricane Melissa, now a powerful Category 5 system moving steadily through the Caribbean and forecast to impact portions of the Southern Bahamas later this week. In preparation for the storm’s arrival, BPL has proactively shut down power plants in Inagua, Long Cay, Crooked Island, and Salina Point, Acklins. The Ragged Island Power Plant is scheduled to be shut down following the completion of evacuation orders.
The Spring Point, Acklins, Long Island, and Exuma Power Plants will remain open until winds exceed 40 mph, after which a controlled shutdown will commence. These actions are necessary to protect critical infrastructure and ensure a safe, swift restoration process once conditions improve.
According to the Bahamas Department of Meteorology, Hurricane Melissa is expected to bring damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and potential coastal flooding to Inagua, Mayaguana, Acklins, Crooked Island, Long Cay, and Ragged Island by mid-week.
In preparation, Southern Regional Manager Pedro Marcello convened a readiness meeting with BPL teams from all islands within the projected path. Each island team confirmed that facilities are in good condition, tree trimming has been completed, and crews are standing by to respond immediately after the storm.
“Our teams across the Southern Bahamas have completed their readiness checks, and we are confident in our ability to respond quickly should any issues arise. We also met with our counterparts in New Providence, who have held their own readiness meetings to ensure that additional support can be mobilized if needed for the Family Islands. All islands in the projected path stand ready.”
BPL assures customers in the projected path that emergency response teams are on standby and fully prepared to respond safely and efficiently should the storm cause power disruptions.
“Preparation is key, and we have taken every step to ensure that BPL is ready to respond to Hurricane Melissa. Our teams are trained, our systems are secured, and we are focused on restoring service safely and efficiently once the storm has passed.”
Customers are reminded to finalize their storm preparations — secure loose objects, charge essential devices, and ensure emergency supplies are accessible. BPL also encourages all consumers to join the BPL Direct WhatsApp Channel for updates on outages and restoration efforts.
