NASSAU, The Bahamas — The majority of customers across the Central and Southeast Bahamas are now back online as Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) advances post-storm restoration efforts in the wake of Hurricane Melissa. Within days of the all-clear being issued, BPL’s technical teams have worked tirelessly to restore power under challenging conditions, re-energizing most of the affected islands and bringing several fully back online.

“Our Family Island teams have done extraordinary work under very difficult conditions. Even with flooding, downed lines, and road obstructions, our staff have remained focused on safety, speed, and service. Their commitment to our customers has been nothing short of exceptional.”

— Pedro Marcello, Regional Manager for BPL’s Southern Bahamas

EXUMA

Exuma’s restoration is now substantially complete. Crews have successfully re-energized nearly all customers across the mainland, including George Town, Bahama Sound, Mount Thompson, Forbes Hill, Farmer’s Hill, and Baraterre. Minor repair work continues in isolated areas affected by flooding or downed high-voltage poles.

“The Exuma team’s performance since the passage of Hurricane Melissa has been outstanding. They worked tirelessly to restore supply across the island within days, ensuring critical infrastructure and the majority of customers were back online in record time.”

— Marvin Green, Regional Manager for BPL’s Northern Bahamas

LONG ISLAND

Restoration on Long Island has reached approximately 95% of customers, with power restored from Gordon’s to Seymour’s. Several side corners remain offline due to lingering floodwaters, which initially reached four feet in some areas but have since receded. Crews expect all customers to be reconnected by Tuesday, November 4. Temporary roof repairs at the power station have allowed generation units to resume safe operation.

CAT ISLAND & RUM CAY

Both Cat Island and Rum Cay are now fully restored. Crews completed repairs to damaged distribution lines and verified system stability across both islands.

ACKLINS

As of 4:00 p.m. Sunday, only five consumers remain offline in the Spring Point area. Teams anticipate completing full restoration before the end of the night.

CROOKED ISLAND

Crews continue to work in the Major’s Cay area, where fewer than ten customers remain without supply. Full restoration is expected imminently.

MAYAGUANA

Power was fully restored at 5:25 p.m. Sunday, November 2, following final repairs to localized distribution lines.

INAGUA

Electricity was restored to all customers on Saturday, with the exception of the clinic, which was re-energized at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, November 2.

SAN SALVADOR

Approximately 75% of customers are now back online, primarily in the northern settlements. The southern portion of the island sustained extensive pole and line damage, with restoration crews currently on site. A team of five additional T&D specialists has been deployed to accelerate repairs. Full restoration is projected by Wednesday, November 5, pending weather and ground conditions.

BPL continues close coordination with BTC and Aliv to ensure the restoration of communications infrastructure across affected islands. Power has been restored to telecom sites on Long Island, Crooked Island, Acklins, and three of four San Salvador stations (SS1–SS3). The fourth site (SS4, located on the island’s south side) remains without supply due to localized damage, with restoration expected within two to three days.

Crews remain on the ground addressing isolated outages and conducting final safety inspections before re-energizing additional feeders. Restoration continues in phases, prioritizing critical facilities such as hospitals, water systems, airports, ports, and communications hubs.

BPL extends sincere gratitude to its Family Island teams for their dedication and to customers for their continued patience and support. Our thoughts remain with every resident impacted by Hurricane Melissa. BPL remains steadfast in its commitment to restore power safely, efficiently, and completely—no matter the challenge, no matter the storm.
