Nassau, New Providence — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) is reinforcing the company’s commitment to regional partnership and mutual aid across the Caribbean, under the umbrella of Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC), by deploying a second eight-member crew to Jamaica to assist with ongoing electricity restoration efforts following Hurricane Melissa.
Comprised of employees from New Providence and the Family Islands, the delegation includes experienced line workers and technical experts. Notably, two members from the first crew are returning to Jamaica, bringing proven expertise to the effort.
BPL Chief Operating Officer Anthony Christie is looking forward to the team’s success. “We are sending some of our best people, our experts, to support Jamaica in their restoration efforts,” said COO Christie. “We are confident that they will make good progress, gain valuable experience, and return home with lessons and stories to share.”
CARILEC operates as a mutual aid framework, allowing utilities across the region to share resources, personnel, and expertise during times of natural disaster and major outages. Through this network, Caribbean nations support one another, particularly in hurricane restoration and recovery efforts.
“We are one Caribbean. We are our brother’s keeper,” COO Christie added. “If The Bahamas were in need, as we have been in the past, other Caribbean nations, including Jamaica, have sent multiple teams to assist us. This is what regional partnership looks like.”
Team Lead Kendal Rolle emphasized the importance of the assignment and the responsibility the team carries. “We are grateful for the opportunity to help bring restoration,” Rolle said. “People are depending on us to restore light to their lives, and we do not take that lightly, not for one minute.”
Returning team member BPL Foreman Paul Curry hopes to use his previous experience in Jamaica to help guide the team, noting that while systems and procedures may vary from country to country, the core principles of the work remain consistent.
“When you go there, you have to adjust to their systems and their way of doing things,” he said. “It may not be done exactly the way we do it here, but the electrical principles are the same. They are very serious about safety, and we respect that,” he added.
BPL remains committed to regional collaboration while strengthening the bonds between Caribbean utilities, ensuring that communities across the region can return to normal as quickly and safely as possible.
