FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NASSAU, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) reaffirmed its commitment to community support and social responsibility this October, donating nearly $10,000 to civic organizations in support of awareness and empowerment initiatives.

The highlight of the month included a $1,000 donation to the Gennie Dean Caring & Sharing Cancer Support Group, made possible through proceeds raised from BPL’s internal Pink Dollar Dance, held on October 31 in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“This contribution holds special significance for us. Cancer touches so many families, including our own team members. We wanted to do something that not only raises awareness but also provides tangible support to an organization that continues to make a real difference in the lives of Bahamians facing this disease.”

— Theodore Sealy, Director of Communications, BPL

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the organization, Duquesa Dean, President of the Gennie Dean Caring & Sharing Cancer Support Group, expressed gratitude and shared insight into their mission:

“We are so grateful for this generous donation from BPL. Our group was founded by my late mother, Gennie Dean, who believed that no one should face cancer alone. Today, our members — from ages 25 to 80 — are living proof that cancer is not a death sentence. We focus on healing the whole person through community, education, and empowerment, and this contribution will help us continue offering essential support like our Sunflower Pantry, free mastectomy bras, and financial aid for patients in need.”

In addition to this donation, BPL continued to demonstrate its social corporate responsibility throughout October by supporting several national initiatives focused on health, inclusion, agriculture, and community upliftment, including:

  • Agricultural Development Organization (ADO) Agrarian Awards (October 18) — Sponsored the Female Farmer of the Year Award with a $5,000 contribution.
  • Royal Bahamas Police Force Family Fun Day, Steak-Out & Raffle — $1,000 contribution to assist officers facing medical and financial challenges.
  • Hope Worldwide Bahamas Fun/Run/Walk (October 18) — Sponsored ten BPL participants promoting health and volunteerism.
  • Rotaract South East Nassau Centennial “Paint Da Streets Pink” Fun/Run/Walk (October 25) — Sponsored ten employee participants in support of breast cancer awareness.
  • Bahamas Down Syndrome Association Buddy Walk (October 25) — Sponsored ten employee participants to support inclusion and advocacy for individuals with Down Syndrome.
  • St. Augustine’s College Student Council Fun/Run/Walk (October 18) — Donated $200 in support of the Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group and The Cancer Society of The Bahamas.

“At BPL, we believe our responsibility extends beyond providing electricity — it’s about powering lives and strengthening communities. This month, our employees came together in an incredible way, wearing pink every Friday to show their support and help us raise funds through our Dollar Dance. We’re proud to end Breast Cancer Awareness Month on a note of unity, compassion, and hope.”

— Chandrice Ferguson, Chief Financial Officer, BPL

BPL remains committed to advancing its social corporate responsibility programs, promoting sustainability, and building partnerships that uplift Bahamian communities.
