Andros Set for Energy Transformation with $20M Hybrid Power Agreement

New Providence, The Bahamas — Consumers in Andros are poised to benefit from more reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity by 2027, following the Government’s signing of a $20 million power purchase agreement (PPA) with Andros Renewable Energy (ARE) for the development of three new hybrid power plants across North, Central, and South Andros.
Once completed, the facilities will deliver a combined 7.2 megawatts (MW) of power, including 6.5 MW fueled by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and 1.6 MW generated through Solar Energy supported by Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The new hybrid plants form part of the New Energy Era, a national energy reform initiative aimed at modernizing generation, improving reliability, and reducing the cost of electricity.
Minister of Energy and Transport, Hon. JoBeth Coleby-Davis, described the agreement as a defining step forward for Andros. “This agreement is a covenant with the people of Andros for the powering of an energy transformation that will support economic growth and development on the island,” she said. “As a small nation comprised of many islands, we have made sure that our national energy reform plans are comprehensive in scope and leave no island behind.”
Founder and CEO of ARE, Kenwood Kerr, emphasized the long-term benefits for the island’s communities. “We are proud to deliver a solution that will bring clean, reliable power to the Andros communities,” he said. “These projects will meet the growing demand for electricity on the island, reduce harmful emissions, and create lasting opportunities for local employment and development.”
The hybrid mix of LNG, Solar Energy, and BESS will work alongside BPL’s existing generation units to increase efficiency and sustainability across the island’s power system, strengthening grid reliability while positioning Andros for future growth. BPL’s Chief Operating Officer, Anthony Christie, noted that infrastructure upgrades will continue in tandem with the new generation assets.
“As ARE constructs and commissions its plants, BPL will continue to enhance the island’s transmission and distribution network to ensure the grid is fully prepared to integrate these new sources of power,” Christie said.
As BPL continues to “Build for Better,” the company remains committed to delivering cleaner, more reliable, and cost-effective energy solutions to consumers throughout The Bahamas.
