BPL Restores Power Supply Across Eleuthera After Successive Outages

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 30, 2026
New Providence, Bahamas Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) advises that power supply has been restored to customers across Eleuthera following a series of system faults that began on Sunday, March 29, 2026, and extended into the early hours of Monday, March 30, 2026.
At approximately 1:34 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2026, technicians at the Hatchet Bay Power Station identified issues affecting the ability to close engine breakers onto the 13.8kV busbar, resulting in widespread outages across the island, except Tarpum Bay and Rock Sound.
BPL teams immediately mobilized, working alongside Aggreko to transition generation from base mode to load sharing/island mode to stabilize the system and support restoration. Through a series of coordinated tests and breaker checks, crews made steady progress throughout the evening.
Restoration efforts commenced at 9:11 p.m. with North Eleuthera and Alice Town being fully reenergized by 9:17 p.m. During restoration efforts, Transmission and Distribution (T&D) teams identified a neutral line down between James Cistern and Governor’s Harbour Airport, which contributed to restoration delays along the Hatchet Bay South feeder.
By 11:15 p.m., supply had been restored as far as Governor’s Harbour, with further progress achieved by 11:35 p.m., when power was restored from Governor’s Harbour to the Rock Sound Power Station busbar. Full restoration of all impacted areas from the initial outage was completed by 12:01 a.m. Monday, March 30, 2026.
At approximately 5:00 a.m. Monday, a subsequent fault caused the Hatchet Bay Power Station South feeder to trip, impacting customers from Rainbow Bay to Bannerman Town, except Tarpum Bay and Rock Sound. BPL’s T&D teams were immediately dispatched and identified fault indicators near the substation, prompting further patrols and corrective action.
Restoration efforts progressed quickly, with supply restored as far as Governor’s Harbour by 7:15 a.m., and extended through to Rock Sound Power Station and surrounding areas by 8:06 a.m.
By approximately 9:20 a.m., power supply was restored to the entire island, underscoring the efficiency and coordination of BPL’s response teams in addressing successive faults within a compressed timeframe.
A small pocket of isolated consumers remains offline. Our team is actively engaged to resolve these individual issues as quickly as possible.
BPL thanks consumers in Eleuthera for their patience and understanding as teams worked safely and speedily to restore the power supply.
