BPL Powers Ahead to Meet Exuma’s Rapid Growth with Reliable, Sustainable Energy

NASSAU, The Bahamas — As Exuma continues to shine as one of The Bahamas’ fastest-growing destinations, Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL) is powering ahead with the infrastructure, capacity, and strategic planning needed to meet the island’s growing energy demands head-on. From expanding generation resilience to advancing system reliability, BPL is ensuring that Exuma’s progress is matched by dependable, sustainable power for residents, businesses, and investors alike.
With visitor arrivals on the rise and billions in new foreign investment driving resort development, Exuma is solidifying its position as a major hub of economic and tourism activity.
Recognizing this growth, Marvin Green, Northern Region Manager, affirmed that the company is fully prepared to meet the island’s increasing energy demands: “We know that Exuma is a bustling and growing economy; that’s why we are pleased to say that we are positioned to stay ahead of any new demand we may face down the road.”
“We currently have a generation capacity of 26 Megawatts (MW), with 16.5MW available. The peak load in recent months was just under 7MW, giving us significant headroom once ongoing reliability improvements are completed.”
Some of these reliability upgrades are already underway as BPL prepares for Exuma’s peak season next year: “One of our generators has already received a major overhaul, with the remaining three to be overhauled by summer 2026. These maintenance efforts are key to ensuring a consistent power supply throughout Exuma, no matter how high demand gets,” Green added.
While presenting at the 2025 Exuma Business Outlook, Chief Operating Officer Anthony Christie applauded BPL staff in Exuma for their dedication and performance:
“Exuma has performed well. We’ve had our challenges, but the team here has worked tirelessly to maintain the engines, keep them online, and respond quickly to incidents that have occurred, so I must commend them all.”
Exuma is also set to benefit from a new hybrid power plant to be developed and operated by independent power provider INTI Corporation, with completion targeted for the first quarter of 2027. This facility will combine 3MW of solar energy, 6MW of battery storage, and 8.5MW of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to deliver a more sustainable, reliable, and cost-efficient power supply to the island.
The completion of the hybrid power plant will further strengthen BPL’s generation capacity on Exuma, adding to the already substantial headroom that exists. As Exuma grows, BPL remains committed to “Building for Better” and providing sustainable, reliable energy to power the island’s continued growth and success.
