BPL Press Release.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 20, 2026

Nassau, The Bahamas — Bahamas Power and Light Company Limited (BPL) is advising customers in Downtown, Shirley Street, East Hill Street and surrounding areas, who have been without power since yesterday, that technicians are preparing to recommence repairs to an issue associated with the East Hill Street Substation.

The East Hill Street Substation provides power supply to customers between Collins Avenue and Marlborough Street, as far south as Vesey Street, and a major portion of the Downtown area.

BPL technicians identified the issue through proactive monitoring, and an additional equipment concern was discovered while crews worked to establish an alternate supply route through the Arawak Cay Substation last night. We wish to confirm that our specialized teams have mobilized to safely address both issues and restore full system redundancy.

Repairs will commence at 12:30pm today and are estimated to take approximately 5–6 hours to complete. Customers are encouraged to follow BPL’s WhatsApp Direct Channel and social media platforms on Instagram and Facebook for real-time updates as restoration work progresses.

We understand how frustrating an extended outage can be for both residential and commercial customers, and sincerely apologize to all customers currently impacted. BPL appreciates your patience and understanding as our teams work to complete these repairs safely and efficiently and restore service as quickly as possible.
