Staying Safe – Before and After a Storm

Like everyone in the Bahamas, BPL takes severe weather very seriously. Well before a storm hits, we’re getting ready ­– ready to assess damages, deploy repair teams and start getting power restored as soon as it’s safe to have our teams in the field.

Safety is our number one priority, and it should be yours as well. Here are some things you can do to be ready for storms before and after they reach us.

Before the Storm

  • Determine the safest place to ride out the storm. Choose a sturdy building and in case things get bad, plan on retreating to a small room with no windows – like an interior closet, hallway or bathroom.
  • Charge your cell phones and other electronic devices.
  • Make sure your first aid kit is well stocked.
  • Have several flashlights and extra batteries ready, along with a battery-operated radio.
  • Have a minimum three-day supply of water, food and drinks on hand: collect one gallon of water per person per day and food that does not need refrigeration.
  • Leave an outside light on so that BPL crews can tell when their repairs are successful.

After the Storm

As soon as it’s safe, BPL will get to work – and work around the clock – to get power restored to everyone as soon as possible. Meanwhile, here’s what you can do to make sure you and your family remain safe.

  • Stay away from downed power lines and anywhere downed power lines can be hiding, including flooded areas, deep puddles, and piles of debris.
  • Report any downed power lines you see. Call 242-323-5561.
  • If your power goes out, turn off and disconnect all your electronic equipment, including computers, TVs, stereos, and microwaves. Leave one lamp or radio turned on so you’ll know when your power is restored.
  • Conserve the cool. Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. If you suspect something may have spoiled, don’t take chances – throw it out!
  • When your power is restored, turn on your appliances and electronics one at a time to help prevent circuit overloads.
  • If power comes back on in your neighbourhood but you still have none, check your circuit breakers or fuses to make sure they’re not the problem. Inspect the area around your meter. If you see it or any of the piping or wiring is damaged, you’ll need to call an electrician.
